Peer Mediators at BHS

At the Boerum Hill School for International Studies (BHS), our Peer Mediators are student leaders who help build a school culture rooted in respect, empathy, and community. Aligned with the NYC Public Schools’ vision of safe, supportive, and inclusive schools, our Peer Mediator program empowers students to lead with compassion and take an active role in resolving conflict through dialogue and understanding.
Peer Mediators are trained students who facilitate structured, confidential conversations between peers to help resolve conflicts, repair relationships, and restore trust. Rather than focusing on blame or punishment, mediation creates space for all voices to be heard and supports students in moving forward with shared accountability and clarity.

Through our Peer Mediator program, students:
  • Learn restorative conflict resolution and communication strategies
  • Help peers resolve disagreements and strengthen relationships
  • Promote a safe and respectful school climate
  • Model leadership, empathy, and problem-solving
  • Partner with adults to support equity and student wellness at BHS

Peer Mediators work closely with our Restorative Justice Team, counselors, and administrators. They are role models in our school community and play a vital role in building a culture where every student feels seen, heard, and valued.
If you are interested in becoming a Peer Mediator, please reach out to Dean Ms. Alexander or Social Worker Ms. Kerri Magee to learn more. We welcome students who are committed to making a difference and helping their peers grow through reflection and dialogue.

At BHS, we know that students are not just part of the school community—they are leaders within it.
