Crew is our school’s advisory program designed to support students’ social, emotional, and academic development (SEAD). Through a partnership with NYC Outward Bound Schools and their Crew Initiative, we are building the capacity and creating the conditions to embed a strong, sustainable Crew culture within our school community.
Funded in part by the City, the Crew Initiative combines tailored, data-driven coaching with collaborative networked learning. This approach connects us with educators from over 50 public schools citywide, all working together to strengthen Crew practices and impact.
At the heart of our program is the Crew Guide — a dedicated educator who receives specialized coaching from NYC Outward Bound Schools and leads the implementation of Crew in our school. Their responsibilities include:
Sharing resources and best practices with staff who facilitate Crew
Designing and adapting lessons to meet the unique needs of our students
Collecting and analyzing data to monitor Crew’s impact
Building sustainable structures that ensure Crew continues to foster student belonging and agency
Students participate in Crew gatherings several times a week, depending on their grade level, meeting with an adult Crew leader. Crew sessions focus on student-led discussions about relevant topics, college and career readiness, academic goal-setting, and engaging team-building activities.
Ultimately, Crew helps us cultivate a school culture where empathy and compassion are practiced daily, where students and educators support one another, and where everyone works collaboratively toward shared goals.
