Welcome from the Special Education & Instructional Support Services Team

Assistant Principal of Special Education Services & Support Mr. Bryant <rbryant6@schools.nyc.gov
On behalf of the entire Instructional Support Services and Special Education Team at the Boerum Hill School for International Studies, we are excited to share the meaningful and inclusive work happening every day in our school community.
Our mission is to engage, challenge, and support all learners with Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) and 504 Plans, in alignment with New York City Public Schools’ commitment to equity and access for all students. We work to ensure every student feels seen, heard, and supported in an environment where they can thrive both academically and socially.
At BHS, we take a whole-child, team-based approach. Students are supported by a caring and collaborative network that includes general and special education teachers, school counselors, psychologists, social workers, related service providers, and administrators—working in close partnership with families and caregivers. Whether it’s navigating the IEP process, developing 504 Plans, or providing informal supports and scaffolds, our team is here to walk alongside students and families every step of the way.

Some of our Special Education Services Include:
  • Integrated Co-Teaching (ICT): Co-taught classes are offered based on students’ IEP recommendations, including in core subject areas and across all grades.
  • Special Education Teacher Support Services (SETSS): Targeted support in small group or individual settings, as recommended in students’ IEPs.
  • Related Services: Speech-language therapy, occupational therapy, counseling, and more—delivered by our on-site providers and itinerant NYCPS staff when needed (e.g., hearing, physical therapy, vision, orientation & mobility, and sign language interpretation).
  • Assistive Technology: We partner with the Center for Assistive Technology (CAT) to enhance accessibility through personalized tools and training.

We are proud to offer multiple opportunities for prospective families of students with IEPs or 504 Plans to connect with our team—both virtually and in person—to learn more about our services, supports, and inclusive approach to learning. Open and ongoing communication with families is a cornerstone of our work, including dedicated time during parent engagement periods.
Beyond the classroom, our students with IEPs and 504 Plans are leaders, artists, athletes, and changemakers. They participate in after-school clubs, sports, student government, and leadership opportunities. We are proud to partner with Eye to Eye, a national mentoring program that connects middle and high school students with learning differences to college and graduate student mentors who share similar experiences. This powerful, student-centered initiative builds confidence, community, and self-advocacy through art, storytelling, and relationship-building.

All students participate in CREW advisory classes that build executive functioning, college readiness, and social-emotional skills.
As educators, we are committed to continuous learning and reflection, building our capacity to better serve students through inclusive, anti-ableist, and culturally responsive practices. We aim to instill in our students self-awareness, self-advocacy, and a sense of belonging—essential tools to navigate high school and shape their futures with purpose and confidence.
We are honored to walk alongside our students and families on this journey. Please don’t hesitate to reach out—we are here for you.
