International Baccalaureate

All incoming BHS students receive an IB education and have access to French & Spanish instruction based on their level of fluency with the exception of our 6th grade students.  Grades 6-10 are part of our Middle Years Programme and grades 11-12 are in The Diploma Programme. This is a boroughwide code, open to all interested families. District 15 families have weighted priority in admissions, but we strongly encourage all Brooklyn families to apply.

FAQs

What is the size of BHS? How many seats are available for 6th grade?

There are approximately 770 students at BHS. We are a 6 – 12 school. –   In 6th grade we are currently accepting 130 students (4 sections) & 9th grade we are accepting 120 students (4 sections).

What time does the school day begin and end?

School officially begins at 9am and finishes at 3:20pm.  There are FREE afterschool programs that conclude at 5:30pm.  Students can arrive at 7:15am for our early bird programs or at 8:15am for breakfast.  

What does a 6th or 9th grade schedule look like?

Classes include all academic core classes (Humanities, Math, Science, French or Spanish, Physical Education, CREW,  &  1 Elective (Visual Art, Theater, Dance, STEM, Music).

Can my child go off campus for lunch?

Only grades 10 – 12 are eligible to go off-campus during their lunch period,  as long as they have returned a signed parental permission slip and arrive to school each day on time and no unexcused absences. Each student must have their school ID in their possession,  and must return back to the building at the designated return time.

What do daily class transitions look like at BHS?

BHS has a separate bell schedule than the other schools in the building. The students do not travel from class to class with the other schools.  Our MS & HS follow the same bell schedule.

Since BHS is 1 of 4 schools in the building, how do I know where to go?

All schools have different arrival/dismissal times. BHS students enter through the main entrance, while all other schools use different locations to enter and exit the building (with the exception of fire drills).

Approximately how many students choose to stay with BHS for High School?

It varies from year to year based on a number of factors, but generally 45-80% of our students choose to continue at BHS for high school. Our 8th grade students are given priority for enrollment.
